What is Chaga?

Feb 18, 2021

As you’re enjoying your favorite iced Chagaccino at home, you may think ‘what exactly is Chaga’? Great question, but it’s not a quick answer. Chaga (known scientifically as Inonotus obliquus) has been around for centuries, and enjoyed by indigenous peoples around the world. Traditionally steeped for 48 hours in water, ReNude has taken Chaga for a spin and created a way to reap all of the health benefits, while enjoying your favorite morning coffee.

The Chaga mushroom, also known as the Diamond of the Forest, only grows on birch trees in freezing climates, most commonly in Siberia, Russia, and parts of Canada. But Chaga’s history is a little more complex. In 1991, ice remains of our 5300-year-old friend, Otzi the iceman, were found clad in Chaga worn around his neck, showing that medicinal mushrooms have been used for centuries.

Extremely rare and only grown on one in 10,000 birch trees, Chaga can’t be farmed or mass produced like other mushrooms can. Chaga absorbs the nutrients of the tree for many years and acts as a band-aid on injured trees, creating a symbiotic relationship. In other words, the tree acts as a host to the Chaga and gives it nutrients to grow, while the Chaga shares its medicinal properties it has available to keep the tree alive. We like to call that plant magic!

Now that you’re more aware of what Chaga is and where it comes from, you still may be wondering why Chaga should be incorporated into your wellness routine. As a superior grade medicinal mushroom with over 215 phytonutrients, Chaga is the most nutrient-dense superfood/adaptogen, bioavailable for you to absorb all of its health benefits:

In every Chagaccino, you’re getting close to one gram of Chaga — no microdosing here! Just one gram of Chaga packs more of an antioxidant punch than blueberries and acai combined, and more than 30 pounds of carrots to ward off free radicals in the body. These antioxidants help to calm inflammation, support cellular regeneration, and protect against cellular damage and genetic mutation.

Chaga increases the production of cytokines, messengers of the immune system, that help ward off diseases and creates a more robust immune system that is in a higher state of readiness for colds, flus and other viruses. In a study by the University of Bradford, researchers even made a connection between the anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties of Chaga and the Covid-19 virus — read more here (link)!

Chaga is one of the most powerful adaptogens on earth. Like the name suggests, adaptogens help the body adapt to stressors. As the body incurs stressors, adaptogens naturally help respond to physical, mental, and emotional stress without directly altering your mood. When combined with our other superfood ingredients, your body is brought back to homeostasis just by enjoying a delicious Chagaccino.

According to a scientific study by PubMed, Chaga has proven to be a successful aid in cognitive function by enhancing learning and memory caused by an increase in Acetylcholine production, also known as ACh. Here at ReNude, we’re redefining wellness. We know that “wellness” is not a one-size-fits-all term, but since Chaga offers so many health benefits, we can offer wellness to the masses, no matter what that means to you. Whether you’re a corporate employee, student, or just need a little brain boost, Chaga can help!

Similar to how Chaga has the highest amount of antioxidants found on earth, it is also the most Melanin-rich compound. Melanin is a powerful anti-aging agent, protecting both the skin and hair from sun damage, UV radiation, free radicals, and assists in minimizing the size of age spots. We love SPF here at ReNude, and in combination with Chaga, you’re bound for that sunkissed glow year round. After all, our motto is “Live Long, Die Pretty!”

If all of the above wasn’t enough, Chaga has been proven in studies to increase not only your energy levels, but sustain endurance levels. When given Chaga Polysaccharides, study shows a boost of up to 25% in energy and endurance in vivo compared to the control group. When combined with your morning coffee, say goodbye to the jittery then crash effect of regular coffee, and hello to long lasting and sustained energy all day long brought to you by the Chagaccino!

ReNude focuses on using only the finest Wild-Foraged Chaga mushroom, where 70% of the fungi is harvested for our Chagaccino blend, leaving 30% on the tree to keep absorbing nutrients and growing for future harvest and sustainable practices. We then use our own proprietary extraction technique that extracts nutrient compounds from the Chaga, then freeze dry into a powder perfect for hot and cold beverages! When blended with organic cacao, Ceylon cinnamon, and monk fruit for the subtly sweet Chagaccino you know and love.
